Mother Teresa of Calcutta became the world's most recognizable symbol of compassion in the second half of the 20th century. Starting out in a slum in Calcutta in 1948, her work soon spread all over the world. The Missionaries of Charity - Sisters and Brothers - is today present in over 100 countries on all continents.
The rich as well as the poor were moved to tears by the selflessness of the nun in a white sari with a blue border.
